October 10 is Double Ten Day, The National Day of Taiwan.
It celebrates outbreak of the “Wuchang Uprising”（武昌起義）in 1911, which led to the collapse of the Qing Dynasty in China and establishment of the Republic of China (ROC) on January 1, 1912.
As a result of the Chinese Civil War, fought between forces loyal to the Kuomintang (KMT)-led government of the Republic of China, and forces loyal to the Communist Party of China (CPC), the government of ROC lost control of mainland China and relocated to Taiwan in December 1949.
ROC, originally based in mainland China (1912 – 1949), now governs the island of Taiwan, which makes up over 99% of its territory, as well as Penghu (澎湖), Kinmen (金門), Matsu (馬祖), and other minor islands. During the establishment of the ROC, Taiwan was under Japanese rule, which began in 1895. In 1945, after surrender of the Empire of Japan in World War II, Taiwan was placed under the control of the ROC.
